What Causes Bunions?

Finding out what causes a bunion is a great way to also learn how to help prevent it from happening to you.

Bunions are a pretty common malformation that typically affects the joint at the base of the big toe. If you have a bunion you may notice a bunionbony growth that juts out from the joint. You may also notice that your big toe leans inwards on the rest of your toes. But what actually causes a bunion and how can you prevent it from happening? Our Reston, Manassas, and Leesburg, Virginia podiatrists have the answers.

Some factors that contribute to this foot condition include:

  •  A traumatic injury to the foot
  •  Genetics
  •  Congenital foot defects and malformations
  •  Arthritis (particularly rheumatoid arthritis)

Narrow, high-heeled or tight shoes can also cause bunion pain It’s a good idea to only wear shoes that fit properly and that provide enough support and cushioning. Wearing narrow or high-heeled shoes can potentially put you at risk for developing a painful bunion.

How do I know if I have a bunion?

If you have a bunion then you may notice a hard bulge that sticks out on the outside of your foot at the base of the big toe. The joint might be swollen or tender or you may notice that the area looks red and inflamed. You may also start to notice pain and discomfort, particularly if your shoes don’t fit properly or put too much pressure on the joint.

When should I visit a Reston, Manassas, or Leesburg foot doctor about my bunion?

If you see a visible hard lump on the side of the big toe joint, if you notice consistent pain around the big toe or if you find that you can’t move around as easily due to pain or other symptoms, it’s time you schedule an appointment with one of our foot doctors.
