Dealing with heel pain? Here’s how to get it under control.

Heel pain is one of the most common foot problems that is treated by our podiatrists in Reston, Manassas, and Leesburg, VA. While some people may be able to treat their heel pain at home, it’s also important to recognize when you may need to see an expert for care. While there are many reasons someone may deal with heel pain the most common causes are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

Fortunately, these two foot problems can often be treated through simple home care measures such as:

  • Icing the heel for 10-15 minutes twice a day

  • Resting as much as possible with feet elevated

  • Avoiding high-impact activities like running

  • Taking pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications

  • Stretching feet throughout the day

  • Wearing supportive shoes that provide proper arch support

  • Placing custom orthotics (shoe inserts) in your footwear for additional cushioning

  • Wearing a night splint

Of course, there are certain home care options that our podiatrists can help with for these very common but very treatable conditions Here at our practices in Reston, Manassas, and Leesburg, VA, we can show you how to use a night splint, administer a cortisone injection, fit you with a walking boot, measure your feet for custom orthotics (shoe inserts) and show you how to properly stretch your feet to reduce heel pain and stiffness. Additionally, we have diagnostic modalities available on site including digital X-Ray and diagnostic sonogram.

When to See a Doctor

At-home care not doing the trick? Noticing symptoms getting worse or just not budging an inch? If so, then it’s probably time to see a podiatrist. In some cases, it might not actually be plantar fasciitis that’s causing you problems. Our podiatrists will be able to figure out the root cause and then provide you with a simple strategy to help promote faster and more effective healing.

In chronic and persistent cases your heel pain may require further treatment including:

  • Laser therapy

  • Ultrasound therapy

  • Electrical stimulation therapy

  • Massage therapy

  • Steroid injections

  • Surgery (in very rare cases)

  • Shockwave therapy
